Boston Private Financial Holdings, a national umbrella company providing private banking and wealth management services through affiliates, hired Mark Thompson as chief executive officer of its private banking group and James Dawson as managing director of its West Coast private banking operations.

Thompson will take charge of the holding company’s banking brands, including Boston Private Bank & Trust, First Private Bank & Trust in Los Angeles, Borel Private Bank & Trust in San Francisco, Calif., and Charter Private Bank in Seattle. Collectively, the banks represent $5.8 billion, and account for $3.6 billion in assets under management.

Dawson’s job is to set up an office in San Francisco, from which he will run the three West Coast banks, reporting to Thompson.
